MIC veep sides with Subramaniam for no.1 post

MIC vice-president M. Saravanan has hinted that he would challenge the incumbent president for the top post. – The Malaysian Insider pic, February 17, 2015.MIC vice-president Datuk M. Saravanan, who had earlier hinted that he would challenge the incumbent president for the top post, today said he would support the party's number two in his bid to unseat Datuk Seri G. Palanivel.Saravanan said he was throwing his weight behind MIC deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam for the president's post, as MIC needed a strong leader.Asked if he would then make a bid for the deputy's post, Saravanan would not confirm it."I will still compete, but for now, the main thing is to focus on the party leadership."Since Dr Subramaniam has announced of his candidacy, I support him 100%, beyond reasonable doubt. The number two is not important ... no point in getting a number two when the number one is not working, so let us focus on the number one first," he said at a press conference today.Saravanan also said that he would abide by the Registrar of Society's (RoS) directive to let the management of fresh elections be handled by the party's 2009 Central Working Committee (CWC).He said Palanivel's actions against the RoS, including his threat to sue the registrar, were wrong."This is an RoS directive to ask the 2009 CWC interim to form an election committee to handle re-elections, if Palanivel wants to say that meetings made during Friday and any meeting at all is illegal, he has to set aside RoS's letter first before doing it."Saravanan claimed that Palanivel's move to reject the RoS' directive as well as the move by Barisan Nasional to appoint an external secretariat to handle the party's crisis was the first time "in Malaysian history" that a cabinet member was going against the government. As such, he said MIC's crisis should be viewed as "a national crisis"."RoS is a government agency. This crisis in this country has never happened before, a cabinet minister in the government challenging a government agency in court, so don't look at it as a MIC crisis, look at it as a national crisis," he said. But he also disagreed with the BN's move to decide on the governance of MIC, saying that while the ruling coalition could "advice" the Indian-based party, it should let MIC govern itself."MIC and Barisan National cannot be separated, if Barisan wants to give some advice, what's the wrong in that? But leave the governing of the party to us, we still have many capable people," he said.MIC is a component member of the ruling BN, and has been in turmoil over disputes regarding its election of certain office bearer at party polls in 2013. The RoS has directed the party to hold fresh elections for these positions, but Palanivel, the president, has been attempting to delay the move.Palanivel has been accused of unlawfully creating party branches and now wants to sue the RoS over its directives which would essentially undermine his powers as president.Earlier today, his deputy Subramaniam announced that he would challenge Palanivel, saying the party needed to consolidate urgently to help the BN prepare for the next general election. – February 17, 2015.
